The Schengen visas you can file without an appointment
Most Schengen missions will not let you through the door without a booked slot, and the slots are the reason people miss their trips. A small number still accept walk-ins. This is every one we could verify, read off each mission’s own published guidance, with the wording quoted so you can check it yourself.
What “walk-in” actually means
A Schengen application has two separate steps that people tend to merge: getting a date, and handing over your file. The appointment is only the first. When a mission accepts walk-ins, it is removing the queue for a date — not the requirement to bring a complete, correct file on the day.
It matters because the three things called “walk-in” are not the same thing, and travelling to a centre on the wrong assumption wastes a day:
Open walk-in
Anyone in the ordinary visitor category may submit during published hours. This is the one worth planning around.
Paid service
Walk-in exists, but as a chargeable optional service on top of the visa fee, and it can be withdrawn without notice.
Limited category
Walk-in is real but reserved for a defined group — long-stay applicants, diplomatic passports, approved appeals, or family members of EU citizens. Ordinary visitors are not covered.

Nigeria: the honest answer
There isn’t one. We checked every Schengen mission operating through VFS Global in Nigeria and found no published walk-in route — not in Lagos, not in Abuja, not in Port Harcourt. Every Schengen application from Nigeria requires a booked appointment.
We are saying so plainly because the gap between demand and slots in Nigeria is exactly where people get sold something that does not exist. If anyone offers you walk-in access to a Schengen centre in Nigeria, or a slot that is not visible on the official system, that is not a service — and paying for it will not put you in the building.
The destination with no appointment at all
If the appointment queue is the thing standing between you and a trip, it is worth knowing that not every country runs one. A New Zealand visitor visa is applied for entirely online through Immigration New Zealand. There is no visa application centre to attend, no slot to compete for, and no appointment to book — from anywhere in the world.
No appointment, and none to miss
Immigration New Zealand states that no in-person appointment is required. The application is submitted and assessed remotely.
No biometrics during the application
Fingerprints and photographs are not collected while your application is processed. Identity checks happen at the border when you arrive, like every traveller.
Most decisions inside two weeks
Immigration New Zealand publishes 80% of visitor visa decisions within two weeks — against three weeks or more for many Schengen missions, before you have even reached the front of the appointment queue.
Online-only from 1 October 2026
Paper applications are being retired. From that date every application for this visa must go through Immigration New Zealand’s online system, which removes the last in-person step.
This is not a way around a Schengen refusal, and it is not a substitute if Europe is where you actually need to be. But if the purpose of the trip is travel rather than a specific country — a holiday, seeing family, a conference you could attend anywhere — a destination with no queue is worth weighing against one where the queue is the whole problem.

Before you travel to a centre
Complete the online steps first
Several walk-in routes only apply once the application form is submitted and the fee paid online. Turning up without that is turning up too early.
Bring a complete file
Walk-in removes the queue for a date, nothing else. An incomplete file is still refused at the counter, and you will have spent the day for nothing.
Check the specific centre
Some routes run at one location only. Latvia in the UK, for instance, is the London centre.
Confirm on the day you go
These policies change without notice and without announcement. Everything here was read off the official pages on 4 September 2026 — check the current page before you set off.

Questions people actually ask
Does walking in make my visa faster?
It makes submission faster, not the decision. Processing time starts when your file reaches the consulate and is set by the mission. Walking in can save you weeks of waiting for a slot, which is often the longest part — but the assessment takes what it takes.
Can I apply through a country with walk-in access to save time?
No. You must apply to the country that is your main destination, or your first point of entry where the trip is evenly split. Applying to a mission because its queue is shorter is a misuse of the rules and a refusal reason in itself.
Is a walk-in application judged more harshly?
No. How you got through the door has no bearing on the assessment. The same file, submitted the same way, is judged on the same criteria.
The centre turned me away — what now?
Policies change without notice, and some routes run at one location or for one category only. Check the mission’s current page, book the earliest available slot, and keep the confirmation. Nothing is lost from your application by having been turned away.
The appointment is one step. The file is the one that gets refused.
