You have never left your country. That is the problem.

Your passport is new. The pages are empty. You have a job, a family, a life you have no intention of abandoning — and no way to prove any of that with the one thing these systems trust most, which is a record of having gone somewhere and come back.

Nobody says this part out loud, so let us: a first application from a country with a high refusal rate, with nothing in the passport, is the hardest application there is.

And the reason it is hard is genuinely circular, which is what makes it so infuriating.

You are refused for having no history. The refusal gives you no history, plus a refusal. Apply again and you are now a person with an empty passport and a decision against you. It gets harder each time, not easier, which is the opposite of what everyone assumes.

What the empty passport is actually being read as

Not that you are dishonest. Officers are not sitting there thinking you are a liar. They are managing risk with very little information and a few minutes to do it in.

Someone who has been to three countries and come home three times has done the thing they are being asked to promise. It is the difference between a claim and a demonstration. You are making the claim, and you have nothing to demonstrate with, so everything else in your file has to work much harder than it would for somebody with stamps.

You cannot manufacture a history you do not have. What you can do is stop asking the passport to carry the argument, and put the weight somewhere else.

Where the weight goes instead

Everything that ties you to where you live has to be shown properly rather than mentioned. A job is not a tie until the file shows how long you have held it, what you are paid, that your leave is approved and that you are expected back on a specific date. A business is not a tie until it has registration, premises, staff or customers attached to it. Property, dependants, a mortgage, aging parents you support — these are the things doing the work the stamps would otherwise do.

The trip itself matters more for you than for anyone else. Somebody with a thick passport can be a bit vague about their plans. You cannot. Specific dates, a specific reason, a return you are already booked onto, and a length that is obviously proportionate. Two weeks with a clear purpose reads very differently from three months of “tourism”.

And sometimes the honest answer is: not this one first

This is the advice nobody wants to give because it does not sell anything today.

If your first ever application is to the hardest destination on earth for your passport, and your file is thin, you are spending a great deal of money to acquire a refusal that will make the next five years harder. There is often a better order to do this in.

A trip within your own region, somewhere the barrier is genuinely lower, puts a real entry and a real exit in that passport. Done once or twice, it changes what an officer sees when they open it. It is slower and it is less exciting than the trip you actually want, and it is frequently the difference between being approved in two years and being refused three times in one.

There are destinations where the whole process happens online with no interview and no visa centre at all, which for a first-time traveller is a far kinder place to start than a consulate window.

What we will tell you

Whether the file you have can carry the application you want, in plain words, before you pay a government fee that nobody refunds.

If it can, we build it around your ties rather than around your passport, and make the trip specific enough that there is nothing left to wonder about. If it cannot, we say so and tell you what would change it — which is sometimes a document you did not know to ask your employer for, and sometimes a different destination first.

An empty passport is not a character flaw and it is not permanent. It is simply a starting point, and the whole game is not wasting your first application on the hardest possible version of it.

Do not spend your first application learning this the hard way.

Tell us where you want to go and what your life looks like. We will tell you honestly whether to go for it now, or in what order.
