The self-employed file
Visa evidence was designed around salaried employment: an employer letter, a payslip, approved leave. If you work for yourself, none of those exist — and the honest answer is not to fake the shape of them, but to build the equivalent from what your business genuinely produces.
The self-employed are not a weaker category of applicant. They are an unaccommodated one. Every standard document in a visa file has a salaried employee in mind, and applicants who work for themselves either leave gaps or borrow a form that does not fit. The file that works substitutes function for format: whatever proves the income exists, the business is real, and the person is coming back.
- The requirement is never the document, it is what the document proves
- Registration, income and continuity are three separate claims and need three separate proofs
- A letter you write about yourself is weak; a letter someone else writes about you is not
- The absence of an employer is not a weakness unless the file leaves it unaddressed
Why the checklist does not fit you
Look at any consulate document list and the employment section assumes a structure: someone else pays you, someone else can confirm it, and someone else has authorised your absence. Three documents, three third parties, and none of them exist when you are the business.
The mistake most self-employed applicants make at this point is to produce the same documents anyway — an employer letter, on their own company letterhead, signed by themselves. It is not dishonest. It is just weightless, because the value of an employer letter was never the paper. It was that an independent party with something to lose put their name to a claim about you.
A letter you write about yourself proves you own a printer. The question is who else will say it.
Three claims, not one
It helps to stop thinking about employment as a single box to tick. The file is actually making three separate claims, and they need separate evidence.
Split that way, the missing employer letter stops being a hole. It was only ever a shortcut that proved all three at once for people whose lives happen to be arranged that way.
Borrowing credibility you do not have to write
The strongest documents in a self-employed file are the ones produced by somebody else, for a reason unconnected to your visa. They are hard to fabricate and obviously so, which is exactly why they carry weight.
When the money moves in ways a statement does not show
There is a version of this problem that is harder still, and it is common across the corridors we work in: a genuinely successful business whose income substantially arrives as cash, or through mobile money, or rotates through a savings group. The bank statement then understates the business badly.
The instinct is to move a large sum into the account before applying so the balance looks right. That produces exactly the pattern described in the first part of this series, and it converts a solvable evidence problem into an unsolvable credibility one.
Where that is not possible, say so. A file that explains a cash-based income, with whatever records do exist, is in a far better position than one that leaves an officer to notice the gap themselves and draw their own conclusion.

Not a weaker case, a different one
Nothing about working for yourself makes you a worse applicant. It makes the standard evidence list a poor fit, and a poor fit is only fatal if the file pretends otherwise. Substitute function for format, start early enough that the records accumulate honestly, and the file answers the same questions the salaried one does.
